Senator: Exploding E-cigarette Recalls Need to be Considered

$

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer is increasing the heat on the federal government to consider recalling e-cigarette batteries and devices that explode and catch fire, injuring users.

The New York Democrat calls e-cigarettes “ticking time bombs.” He says the volatile e-cigs continue to cause injuries including severe burns.

Faulty lithium-ion batteries are seen as the likely culprits.

Schumer wants the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to figure out why so many devices from China and elsewhere are exploding. He says recent injuries are proof federal action is urgently needed.

Schumer on Sunday cited a recent Associated Press story saying the FDA identified about 66 explosions in 2015 and early 2016. The AP story said the numbers kept by the FDA may be an undercount.

The industry maintains e-cigarettes are safe when used properly.

The FDA says it’s reviewing e-cigarettes.

Marijuana Advocates to Hand Out Joints at Trump Inauguration

WASHINGTON (AP) — A group of marijuana legalization advocates plan to hand out thousands of joints during President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration.

Pro-marijuana organization DCMJ will begin distributing the 4,200 joints at 8 a.m. on Jan. 20 on the west side of Dupont Circle. The participants will then walk to the National Mall.

At four minutes and 20 seconds into Trump’s speech, DCMJ founder Adam Eidinger says protesters will light up.

He says the giveaway is legal as long as it’s done on District of Columbia land. Those smoking on federal land risk arrest.

Eidinger says the group wants to send a message that the federal government should legalize cannabis.

Marijuana advocates are concerned about what actions attorney general nominee Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama would take on the issue. Sessions has previously spoken out against marijuana legalization.

ALLIANCE – The Main Street Players Community Theater will present the murder mystery, Murder Most Fowl, at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 14 at Newberry’s in Alliance. Written and directed by Elaine Connelly Bleisch, the show features an all-local cast. The evening will begin with a country-style dinner catered by Sauced and will include a cash bar.

Chester and Mae Belle Beaumont have hosted the Chicken Coop, a country western style variety show for the past twenty years, along with their daughters Ellie Mae and Bobbie Sue. Now Carl, the director/producer, is planning to take the show in a brand new direction – one that doesn’t include Chester and Mae Belle!

If that weren’t bad enough, Carl also upsets all the Hens in the Hen House when he brings in Tammy Wynot, whose talents do not include acting or singing, to be the new star of the show. Tammy, however, has other plans and wants to leave the show. Meanwhile Uncle Floyd and Bubba are not happy with their contracts. There’s a fox in the Chicken Coop, but is it enough for murder?

The cast includes Jason Wentworth and Emma Penkava as Chester and Mae Belle, Angela O’Leary as Bobby Sue, Tanya King as Ellie Mae, and Chris Obershaw as Carl. Rounding out the “Chicken Coop” cast are Caitlin Obershaw as Tammy Wynot, Shawn Weibert as Bubba, and William Graham as Floyd. David Kuskie plays Zeke, the bandleader, with Grant Robbins and Linnea Bleisch as band members and and Jewelia Taylor and Kat Kuzmic as “hens”. Elora Bleisch and Tristan Bleisch play guest stars “The Tappin’ Tompkin Twins” and Elaine Connelly Bleisch plays Carl’s put-upon assistant.

For more information or to buy tickets contact Elaine Bleisch at (308)-760-8863, check the Main Street Players Facebook page (www.facebook.com/MainStreetPlayersAlliance), purchase tickets online (http://bit.ly/2ifNUEa), at Sauced, or through a cast member.

Nebraska Gov. Ricketts Defends Trump Order on Refugees

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts is defending President Donald Trump’s order to temporarily suspend immigration for citizens from seven majority Muslim countries.

Ricketts acknowledged Monday that the decision was disruptive for travelers from those countries but argued that it could help the United States avoid the problem of terrorists entering the country by claiming to be refugees.

Ricketts says the federal government should move quickly to put a new vetting process in place so immigration can resume.

He also is urging Nebraska residents who are concerned to get involved with the state’s three resettlement agencies: Catholic Social Services, Lutheran Family Services and the Refugee Empowerment Center.

KALIN KROHE REFERENCE ANNOUNCES THE RELEASE OF DEBUT EP, BIRD OR MACHINE
Recorded in Nashville, the EP is an unpretentious indie folk-pop record which requires your full attention

With the worldview of a philosopher, the caring heart of a folk singer, and the musical sensibilities of an indie rocker, singer-songwriter Kalin Krohe announces the release of his debut EP, Bird or Machine, on Feb. 25th, 2017.

Recorded at legendary CTM Studios in Nashville, TN, with members of The Outer Vibe, Bird or Machine marks a maturation in Krohe’s life and career. Embarking on a musical odyssey to the land of the Grand Ole Opry, Krohe branches out to embody a larger sense of identity as a musical outlier.

Created simply for the pleasure and life experience, without the attachment to any material outcome, Bird or Machine is, on one hand, a protest of the current commercial music climate, and on another, an unpretentious snapshot of a budding artist’s search for self and meaning. On the title track, Krohe sings “Are you really who you are? Are you really torn apart? Are you at a casting call, choosing a role and part?”

These are questions we can all ask ourselves in the search for identity and spiritual reconciliation. As Shakespeare said, “All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players; they have their exits and their entrances, and one man in his time plays many parts….” Ultimately, Krohe reminds us it’s our choice and our choice alone: “Are you a bird or machine?”

Traveling to Nashville from his home in Alliance, Nebraska, Krohe wanted to see the sights of middle America, to taste the same air as Woody Guthrie, to sing the same exaltations as the legends of music who’ve traveled our highways before him. Arriving in Nashville, via pitstops in Lincoln and Davenport to see friends and family, Krohe was quick to check out Jack White’s record store, take in the sights and sounds of Broadway (downtown Nashville), and feel in complete awe and gratitude for music itself.

Nashville has a way of humbling people. And it has a way of giving to people. What Krohe was given in Nashville was the production help from an established band (The Outer Vibe) who recorded one of their recent albums with noted engineers Brad Dollar (John Mayer, The National) and Joe LaPorta (Foo Fighters, Vampire Weekend). Their production experience has paid dividends for Krohe, who on one track, sounds backed by a seasoned bluegrass band, and on another, sounds like he’s one of Fleet Foxes’ long lost members.

If you’re a fan of indie rock, folk, or pop – or just good, introspective songwriting, check out Bird or Machine, which is out independently Feb. 25th, 2017 (coinciding with the Nebraska 150th Celebration event).
